NANNY MARKET RELATED SALARIES

There are many factors to take into consideration when assessing what a nanny should be paid. For example, their qualifications and experience, whether the nanny lives in your home with you or comes to your home daily, whether the nanny is part time or full time, the number of hours worked per week and how much responsibility the nanny is required to take on.

These are MARKET RELATED nanny salaries in terms of what the majority of families pay / SHOULD pay their nannies in South Africa. Yes, there are exceptions to the below. Some families pay more, but then they generally expect more in terms of qualifications, experience, age, job functions, hours worked, flexibility etc.

*Please note the above is dependent on the LEVEL of the candidate you would require (see below) which is also dependent on affordability in terms of the salary you are able to pay.

The salary guide below is for a standard 45-hour week. According to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, an employee cannot be forced to work overtime. Any hours worked over and above the standard 45-hour week (9 hour day), is classified as overtime.

STANDARD NANNY or NANNY DOMESTIC
Salary Range: Approximately R6500 – R6800

A standard nanny or support caregiver is ideal for families looking for reliable, loving, and practical childcare support within the home environment.

These candidates often have:

• Childcare experience with babies, toddlers, and children
• Basic nanny or childminding training
• Experience with feeding, bathing, naps, and daily childcare routines
• Full housekeeping duties
• General understanding of children’s emotional needs


Typical duties may include:

• Feeding and preparing meals
• Bottle feeding and nappy changes
• Bathing and dressing children
• Outdoor play
• Basic stimulation and play activities
• Maintaining routines
• Children’s laundry and tidying play areas

Important To Note:
While many standard nannies are loving, experienced, and capable caregivers, they may not necessarily have advanced knowledge or training in:

• Developmental milestone coaching
• Sleep training
• Infant stimulation programs
• Educational planning
• Detailed milestone tracking
• Structured developmental activities
• Newborn or premature baby specialization


These positions are generally best suited to families seeking practical childcare assistance and nurturing support.


SENIOR NANNY or EXECUTIVE NANNY WITH DRIVERS LICENSE
Salary Range: Approximately R7000 – R8500

Senior Nannies generally have more years of childcare experience and a stronger understanding of children’s emotional, physical, and developmental needs.

These candidates are suitable for families looking for:

• More confident childcare support
• Baby and toddler experience
• Greater independence and initiative
• More structured routines and stimulation activities

Senior Nannies typically offer:
• Experience caring for babies, toddlers, and older children
• Basic to moderate developmental stimulation
• More confidence in handling routines and transitions
• Emotional support and nurturing care
• Educational play and age-appropriate activities
• Better understanding of children’s developmental stages
• Light child-related housekeeping duties and school runs


Important To Note:
Although Senior Nannies often have extensive hands-on childcare experience, they may still differ significantly from highly specialised Infant Specialists or Executive Nannies.


Not all Senior Nannies have:

• Formal ECD qualifications
• Advanced infant development training
• Sleep training expertise
• Newborn specialist experience
• Educational teaching backgrounds
• Structured milestone tracking systems

Families requiring premium infant care, developmental coaching, educational planning, or highly specialised newborn support may require a higher-calibre Executive or Developmental Nanny.



INFANT SPECIALIST / DEVELOPMENTAL NANNY
Salary Range: Approximately R9000+

Infant Specialists and Developmental Nannies are highly experienced childcare professionals with specialised training and extensive hands-on experience in newborn, infant, and developmental care.

These candidates are often sought after by:

• First-time parents
• Families with newborns or premature babies
• Families wanting highly structured infant care
• Parents seeking developmental guidance and educational support

These professionals typically offer:

• Advanced newborn and infant care
• Developmental milestone support
• Infant stimulation activities
• Sleep training and structured routines
• Tummy time and physical development exercises
• Weaning and solids guidance
• Feeding and nap tracking
• Educational and sensory play
• Strong initiative and independent caregiving
• Professional communication and reporting
• Knowledge of infant safety practices

Many Infant Specialists and Developmental Nannies also have:

• Advanced childcare qualifications
• ECD or educational backgrounds
• Newborn care certifications
• Sleep training experience
• CPR and First Aid training

These candidates generally command higher salaries due to their level of expertise, professionalism, training, and ability to provide premium one-on-one childcare support.
